Computer Crashing

  edna 18:40 05 Mar 2004

I am using WindowsME V4 with 128Mb Ram. I keep getting crashes with a particular software and the message "[programme] has caused and error in KRNL386.EXE [programme] will now close" but instead of closing it crashes my computer. I've tried running the programme with nothing running in the background except the essentials, systray etc., but it still does it. The fault suddenly developed today after months of using the software OK previously. Can anyone tell me what KRNL386. EXE is and is this a software fault or a fault with my computer?

What's the program and what's the error message?

Hi Big Elf, the prgramme is Custodian genealogical software and this is a copy of the error log =

Can you sort this out?

It seems to a rare fault based on a bit of googling. Possibly uninstalling the program and reinstalling it might help. Do you recall doing anything today that might have a bearing on this e.g. installing another program (I'm thinking of a possible conflict here).

  edna 19:29 05 Mar 2004

Conflict was my first thought, but nothing has been installed since an upgrade to another programme 2 days ago, if this was the problem then surely it would have started then, not out of the blue today? I scanned C drive 2 days ago and defragged 20 days ago, do you think I need another defrag?

  Big Elf 19:39 05 Mar 2004

I don't think it would help but you never know.

  Big Elf 20:01 05 Mar 2004

What was the program you upgraded?

After my personal experience of WinME nothing would surprise me. I used to format and reinstall roughly every 6 weeks but some people swear by it... I used to swear at it.

Family Historian genealogical software (have you guessed I'm a genealogist?)was upgraded.
WinME has been surprisingly OK up to now, I've had this new system a year now and, apart from losing my removable drives a couple of months ago, which reappeared as mysteriously as they disppeared, I've had no problem until now.

  Big Elf 20:22 05 Mar 2004

Perhaps try a System Restore to the point before you upgraded Family Historian genealogical software and see what it's like for a few days.

Thanks for your help Big Elf, after defragging etc., I discovered that the problem doesn't arise if use the mouse to move to each cell instead of the tab key. So either a software glitch or my keyboard it seems. Once again thank you for your help and quick response.
