compaq presario 6505 cannot use recovery partition

I have been trying to reboot my computer using the recovery cd's after the operating system would not boot. I tried a non destructive recovery but got the following error. Cannot create user partition unable to continue.
I also get the same error when I reloaded the recovery cd's. I put a spare hard drive into the computer and carried out a system restore using the recovery cd's but got the same error message.
I put the spare hard drive into another computer and found that the recovery partition had been installed and the space is now only half of its origional size. Is there any way to recover the operating system and how do I reformat the spare hard drive to get back the missing memory.
