Compaq mains/battery switchover

My Compaq Presario says it's got a 100% charged battery and the battery itself shows five green lights , but I can't get it to start on battery even with the mains plug out . Other than that it's fine . Is there a hidden switch somewhere ?

I'm not familiar with that particular computer, but laptops that I've come across don't need any switch to be actuated, in order to swap from mains to battery power.

Normally you just plug in the battery and unplug the mains.

Are you sure that you have the battery fully plugged in? Could there be a dodgy connection to the battery connector?

And have you checked the battery voltage to be absolutely certain that it is holding a charge?

I know the battery is connected because the battery icon doesn't come up on the desktop when it's out also the battery meter doesn't work with no battery and that showed a gradual increase in charge whilst plugged into the mains up to 100% . I wonder if there is an automatic cut off in the jack plug and thats stuck open ?

Try removing battery and mains. Press and hold the start button for a minute.
Replace battery and try a start up.
