when swithcing on and tapping F8,

I saw that a list appeared

this contained the following::

Floppy 1.4####
IDE-0 (1ST )H/DRIVE #####
IDE-1 (2ND) h/DRIVE #####
CDROM Pioneer DVD rom DVD 116.

There is no mention of my CD-RW.

So is this saying that my comp does not recognise the unit at all.

If so how can I reconfigure it.

Also auotplay does not work at all on Dvd player or the Cd-rw.

I have XP Home sp 1 pack

Er - You've just listed 4 devices including your 2 optical drives.

Are you unable to burn CDs?

Sorry 5 including the floppy - that's a fullhouse by my reckoning. :o)

Possible that the Pioneer dvd is showing as a CD-Rom. That would still leave one free. What does it say when you switch on and let it go through normally, without press F8 ie when the message "detecting ide drives appears," and then they appear underneath it.

Also does it show in device manager?

If not could be anything. Loose or faulty cable, faulty drive itself. You'll need to check them one by one.
