COM3 What or where is it?

My modem says it it going through COM3 but when I list devices I only see COM1,COM2 and LPT1. So what is the modem using? Is there some sort of internal virtual COM for devices such as modems?

Yes, a sort of "virtual" COM port created by the modem / windows connection. There may well be a more technical description, but that is the basis of it as I see it.

Looking in the config for the Modem on COM3 it says it uses FIFO buffers, what are they?

FIFO = First In First Out

As opposed to LILO or FILO or LIFO
