COM1 port

Can someone please tell me how to find out what facility/program is using my COM1 port? My PC refuses to run winmsd. Is there another program available that will tell me this info?

Apparently in XP winmsd has been replaced with msinfo32.exe, so you can click Start - Run and ype msinfo32, and OK out of the dialog window. You can get the sane place via Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - System Information.

Thanks guys , neither of these programs give me the info, and for some weird reason my PC refuses to open msinfo32 either

Access the system information?

COM ports are sometimes known as serial ports

start menu/all programs/accessories/system tools/system information

In system information click on the + on components to expand it, click on the + on ports to expand it. Select serial.

this will vive you a list on serial ports (com ports) and will start something like

Name communication port (com 1)

Status (Hopefully) OK
Device PNP device (or whatever yours is)

Com 1 may be used for a dial up modem if you have one.

About half way down the list will be the driver location.

i.e c:\windows\system32\etc

Hope this helps
