CMOS reset gone wrong

  Grimy Corporal 21:43 19 Sep 2004

Ok, first off thanks in advance for any advice that you can give me.

My mate has reset his Motherboard CMOS because his Windows XP installation was reseting itself (might have been a virus) all the time and now whenever he tries to boot up all he gets is a black screen and nothing else. He's asked me to take a look at it for him but I'm stuck for ideas on how to recover his machine for him.

Best Regards

Check for any beeps. click here

Ensure that the graphics card has not got dislodged (unlikely I think...).

Diodorus Siculus, that was quick. At the moment I don't have his machine (he's dropping round tomorrow after work) but thats a good start, check for error beeps and check security of internal cards.

How did he reset the cmos, by jumper, taking the battery out or reseting defaults.

If by jumper, make sure it is connected properly and it is on the closed pins, not the open ones.

If by battery, is it firmly fitted in.

BSOD, sorry for the late reply. I don't know how he reset the cmos but I'll check out what you suggest anyway.

Many thanks
