When the PC is started it shows FF on my Postcard I don’t think its loading correctly from what I have read and have tried the following.
I managed to Format a 40Gig HD but it took three attempts.
Using this drive
It only posts from a fresh switch on not from restarting
I have tried testing the Ram its OK.
Sometimes freezes on key board strokes, replaced KB
I have removed USB / Fire wire Unwanted modem /and a third device I have never used these are all connected by wires to MOBO and not PCI slots.
Then unplugged the DVD CD and FD in turn. (DVD wont work now)
Its now on CD HD and FD only.
When restarting it only starts the monitor 2 out of 5 times.
It had 80 wire flat cables and I changed them with other 80 FC I have now put on 40 wire FC.
I have reset the fail safe defaults in CMOS.
When I pop the original XP HD on it stops on the screen before the Welcome to Windows XP the cursor is in the middle of the screen.
I Tried Recovery but just freezes.
All fans are working.
Thinking of new MOBO.
I am going out now but back in mornig to try any advice.

I would say it is a Hardware fault. Have you a Spare PSU that you can try?

Try fail safe defaults first

You need 80 wire cables

I take it the items you have removed were plugged not soldered to board. Is the mobo a proprietary make (e.g.Dell?)

Hi I do have a new PSU can some one verify that it is ok to fit this model.
Existing PSU Model No ATX 300GTF / Replacement Model ISO-450PP.

Motherboard is a mPGA 478 Socket AGP Grapics no makers name cant find exact model on net.

I have many other PSUs 6 years old and beyond.
I will change back to 80 Wire as original spec.
And the wires were all plug ins that I removed.

It certainly sounds like hardware fault and I just wonder if you have checked the cpu temperature?

Any standard psu with enough power should be ok. This is worth changing first

Have you motherboard drivers disk to try reinstall?

You do not need to remove the PSU to try your spare one. turn power off at mains, all the plugs need to be the same so you can change them with the PSU in the bottom of the computer there should be space to put it there while you try it

Hi the new PSU made no difference.
I have also tried a different FD Mouse and Keyboard in turn.
The PC always Posts one beep as usual but not on reset as it never gets that far in the start up sequences.
The Post card shows FF on switch on.
It could be the processor is to hot.
I formatted the drive no problem this morning but I could not reload windows XP it just hangs.
Any other advice would be appreciated.

Have you tried with the side off and a desktop fan blowing in to the computer. As you say the CPU fan may need to be a better quality cooler
