Cloning Hard Drive

Hi there, I have a new HD that I am putting in a spare PC that was a barebones machine with no HD.

The HD is completely empty and when I turn on I just get a dos prompt. I have tried booting with a Linux CD and a Win98 CD but can't get it to do anything.

Do I need to get software to enable me to copy the O/S on my main PC to this new HD (if I put the new HD into my main PC and then reinstall in the barebones machine)?

The new HD is smaller than my own HD but all I need are the essential files to enable the new HD to boot up in the other PC - perhaps the o/s doesn’t even need to be put on it?

When you boot, you may see something like

press del to enter setup

Alternatively it may be press F2 etc

Do that and navigate through startup options; choose CDROM as First Boot Device

Save and exit using commands as in display.

Remember, Win98 will not boot by itself; you need a bootable floppy.

Most Linux CDs will boot.

A DOS prompt from a `completely empty HD`? Or just a flashing underscore?

A Windows 98 CD is bootable

The Clone will not work, its for a different Computer

Yes, i get a dos prompt not a flashing underscore.

I will re-check the BIOS boot up order - I was nearly sure I had set the CD to boot first!

What drive letter is in the prompt? A or C? or something else?

It's an A prompt but there is no FDD installed

If you have a 98se CD after changing boot order in BIOS, start with CD in drive then at the prompt type FDISK. Create a Primary Partition then Shut Comp;uter Down, NOT RESET. Start backup with CD in Drive and type Format C: press enter. after format restart with cd and type setup if it does not start automaic
