Clicking External Hard Drive Misery

Maxtor external drive seems to have gone do lallie...no lights on drive box, converter working but nothing else. Am assuming drive has malfunctioned. Is there any way to check this or repair? Is there any place to take it to confirm? Usually, a nice "hummmming" noise insured all in working order. Replaced by sickly "clicking" sound.....Hmmmmm. Thanks.

I should have added - if the hard drive is clicking, then it probably has a serious head problem. If you can't read the data on the drive, then it is very unlikely that you will be able to recover the data without spending a very large amount of money.
