clearing hard drive query

I have an old pc that I am going to get rid of but I dont want anyone being able to recover old data on the hard drive will using the setting revert the pc to factory settings when it came do this or do I have to format it completely and will theat do the trick

if i put it back to factory setting using the system recovery which puts pc back to when i brought it would that not clean drive of all data

Be careful what you do. If you wipe the HDD completely then the restore disc might not work.

Restoring back to recovery settings should be adequate

Travelmoney is right to suggest Eraser, if you put your computer back to factory settings, then use Eraser to wipe free space on the disc.
