I've always been able to do it but now I can't !!
I go into a file and try to change a name (photos etc), and I'm told that I may not be able to view it again if I do proceed !!..so I cancel.

Any ideas and many thanks.

Make sure that you can see the file extension:

1. Click Start.
2. Click My Computer.
3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
4. Select the View Tab.
5. Untick the Hide file extensions for known file types.
6. Click OK.

Then try changing the file name but don't try changing the extension.

What type of file are you changing the name of e.g. jpeg? If you delete the file type (at the end of the file name e.g. .JPG) the warning will come up as the PC will not know what type of file you are trying to open in the future.
