Sometimes when I want to change a name belonging to a picture, I get the message "If you change a file name extra, the file may become unusable, Do I really want to change it.Yes or No. Why is this?

extra? I think you mean extension.

If you look at a file name like a picture...

atlantis.jpg

You can alter the atlantis section but not the .jpg bit. That ending tells the computer what kind of file it is, so it will know program to open it with.

You can "hide" known File Extensions if you do the following....

Open a Folder, and go to "Tools->Folder Options->View" and tick the option "Hide extension for known file types" and click OK
You should notice that all you can now see if the file-names only, excluding file extension
