Honor 9 Lite review
When I look in device manager and 'my computer' the CD/DVD drive is missing. When I put CD/DVD's in the drive I can hear the drive spinning but nothing happens.
The OS is Windows XP Home and it's on a Compaq laptop.
I've deleting the filters in the registry and tried a small program that's supposed to fix it but with no luck.
Either a bad connection or the drive is us.
Can you remove and refit the drive to remake the connections?
Have you changed anything in bios ?
Check that the leads and connections are firmly attached and then Uninstall the drive in Device Manager.
Reboot and Windows will Find New Hardware and reinstall the basic CDROM driver, which is all that is required (burning programs control the drive's operation).
If this doesn't cure it, then the most likely reason is that one of the lasers has packed up (you don't say if it's CDs or DVDs that won't play?burn).
As DVD-RW drives cost from around £15 upwards for a top brand model these days, it wouldn't be expensive to replace.
Thanks for the advice:
MAT ALAN: I read the article you suggested but it's still the same.
Fruit Bat /\0/\: I can't remove the drive as it's part of the casing.
Alan-Petrie: I didn't change anything at first but tried putting the CD/DVD drive as first boot priority but again with no luck.
Stuartli: I can't check the cables as it's inside the laptop and it would mean removing the whole of the bottom of the laptop and other bits and pieces. As it's not my laptop but a friend's I don't want to start messing with it physically.
Sounds like you have tried the below but do double check;
Missing cd/dvd drives can be normally associated with the removal of burning software such as Nero/Roxio/Sonic/Easy CD Creator etc.
And not showing the drive in My Computer.
Try the below link ,if still no luck follow the Procedure of removing the upper and lower filters.
If no joy with the above fix,try the Microsoft Guided Help
click here scroll down to the Guided help download and follow the instructions.
If still no joy, follow the manual fix below.
If you have further any error codes, please post them.
Restore Missing CD/Dvd Drives
Missing cd/dvd drive
If it is showing an error code:
Code 19, Code 31, Code 32, Code 39, or Code 41
, delete the drive.
Then follow these directions for clearing the Upper/Lower Filters: (might want to print this out)
1. Click on Start --> Run --> and type in 'regedit' followed by the enter key ( if Vista Start search or windows+R )
2. Expand the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" key (looks like a folder) by double clicking it (or
3. clicking the "+" next to it.)
4. Expand the "SYSTEM" Key
5. Expand the "CurrentControlSet" Key
6. Expand the "Control" Key
7. Expand the "Class" Key
8. Please look for a key containing the following string of letter and numbers:
9. High light this key by left clicking once on it
10. On the right hand side you are looking for "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" under the "Name" column, once you find these please delete them by right clicking on them and choosing "delete"
11. Please exit the registry by clicking on the "X" in the top right hand corner of the screen
Reboot your computer
.If in any doubt editing the registry, please create a System Restore point first and also backup your registry....The guidedhelp from Microsoft on backing up the registry is a good lesson for anyone to learn. click here
Creating a System Restore point:
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore…follow the prompts.
If you have added a new burning suite such as Nero/Roxio/Sonic etc....uninstall this to see if this has caused a conflict.......it happens at times.
Alternatively, try system restore to a date the drive worked ok.
I've already tried with the registry and small CDfix program.
Syatem restore couldn't restore to an earlier time.
I can hear the disk spinning inside so there's power getting to it - it must be a software problem.
I noticed you wrote something about burning software being missing. Well there isn't any on the laptop just 'Intervideo DVD' to watch videos. I do have Nero but how do I install it if the drive isn't reading?! Catch 22!
have you rebooted since running the prog or registry fix?
Check that the BIOS can see the drive ok
Fruit Bat /\0/\: yes I've rebooted but no luck.
woodchip: I've put the drive as first boot priority. Is there anywhere else in the BIOS the drive would be mentioned?
