CD Roms not working

  smithy66 15:41 04 Sep 2005

Hi, both my Combo and DVD Burner are not working, when I insert a disc the green light flashes for about 40 seconds then stops. If I open My Computer and right click the cd drive and click open it tells me to insert a disc, even though there is one in there.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Can we have some more information please? What is your O/S? What is the model of your combo/dvd burner? What program are you using to read the disks? What is on the disks you are trying to read? You said it is a combo and DVD burner but you are talking CD roms???

Both disc drives will not read anything, even Games and Music CD's

Are the two drive on the same IDE slot (IDE 1)?. There is a chance that the connection (Wide grey cable)has come loose on the mothboard and needs pushing in again to make good contact with all pins

No, that isn't what I asked. What it the make and model of your DVD burner?

Both drives are probably on the secondary IDE channel.

1. Check IDE cable is tight in socket at motherboard.

2. In device manager, unistall and reinstall the secondary IDE channel.

It sounds like a faulty Ribbon Data cable

If both are on the same IDE channel then connections or cable fault. Rattle connections. get a spare cable.
