CD drive will not read cd's

  SPARKY 11:32 04 May 2005

Hi, has anyone any ideas why all of a sudden a cd drive will not read the disc. Upon trying to explore a disc there it is as there is nothing in the drive, but if you leave the disc in and re-boot the disc contents are there and can be used.
the PC is an older system based on a Duron 800 running XP Pro SP2.
I've tried another drive, swapped IDE cables and channels and still the same.
Help ??

Try uninstalling and re-boot.

The system should re-load the drivers automatically, if this does not fix it you might need to update the drivers.

Thanks Indigo, but I have already tried that, and I forgot to say all is well ( apparently ) in device manager.

I assume this happens with different CD`s; not just one.

I had a similar problem some time ago. The only remedy was to change the CD Rom.

All discs give the same and Ive tried a second known to be good drive.

Yep me too, I had to change my CD-ROM.
