Hi Morpheus?. Most CD drives are essentially thew same. Your daughters one shold have a 4 pin plug for power. This plug is about 1 inch wide. It should have a much smaller 4 pin connector for analogue sound out, this connects via a round screened cable to the sound card. Then there should be an IDE connector that connects by a 40 way ribbon cable to the motherboard. A superb drive that should be fine for the task is made by LG and only costs about ?12 + postage click here. This is an oem drive, but that just means that it may not have any cables or screws, but you will already have those.

Get a liteon drive for the same money, it uses gears and not belts to drive the CD tray.

Re. the posting from The Sack. The liteon drive is only about 50p dearer click here. Bothe are excellent drives. LG would be quieter tray opening, but eventually the belt may break or slip off the wheels, but probably not within the lifetime of the old Compaq. It's really a matter of preference.
