CD Drive not working

Please help I have lost or not working my D Drive,when I go into my computed drive?r the drive is missing and I cannot use system restore I can highlight it but does not run to reinstall from the hard drive.Can I reinstall without the CDrive working. Running windows xp home----- using daughters laptop to ask for help

Try restarting in safe mode and open device manager. Highlight the cd drive and click on the uninstall icon. Restart in normal mode and the drive should come back.

If not it has probaly had it and will need to be replaced.

It might be worth making sure the ribbon connector and power supply are still firmly in the back of the drive.

I had this problem once with both D and E drives.

They were not listed in Device Manager, but there in Safe Mode.

Eventually it transpired that a session creating a better air flow through the case had resulted in the secondary IDE cable becoming slightly loose on the mobo socket; it was not obvious that this was the cause due to the mass of cables as the cable connection was obscured from view.

Pushing the cable firmly back in brought back the "missing" drives.

do you have incd and nortion software by any chance, as these two clash and take it out on the drives

INCD 4.0 the newest version is ok with Norton
