Cd drive not accesable Win 98

  neko 10:30 24 Jul 2003

When I try to access a CD drive it says it is not accesable. It is detected fine on start up and is shown in my computer. There are no problems shown in Device manager. It is configured as a primary slave with a working CDRW drive as master.
I have swapped it over to make it the master and it still says the same thing.
In properties with no cd in the drive it says it is full and FAT 32!
I have also tried all types of cd media.
It is not recognised by XP on the same sytem.
I can't find any drivers for it.
I think it has had it but just thought someone out there may know something.
WIn 98SE
It is listed as CD-ROM DRIVE/F5A

Thanks in advance

You seem to have done everything you can.

One possible further pre-death certificate the read light on the cd and better still listen for sounds of activity if you can.
When they have died on me, there is often a brief spin up after inserting a CD and then just as quickly the drive stops and remains still and shows no further interest.

This is not a reason in itself for condemnation but it probably is time for a new one!

Hi Diemmess!
Yeah should have said. the CD tray opens and closes but no whirring noise and no light.
Its not my machine, I have just sorted a few things for a friend as i know a tinsy bit more than him. I just wanted to make sure the CD ROM drive had had it before I told him.
