CD contents not recognised by explorer in XP

CD contents are recognised by explorer(windows XP) if the cd is in the drive before booting. If the cd is removed and a different cd loaded explorer does not recognise the cd or list the contents. Reboot the computer and the new cd is recognised. The system has been working fine and this problem has developed recently.
The same problem occurs with devices connected temporarily to a usb port.
If anybody knows of the cause and possible solutions please advise.

Have you tried a system restore to a point where you know you had a good configuration.

Don't know if this will help
When you view the contents of a CD-ROM in Windows Explorer, you can see the name of the CD-ROM in the left pane, and the folders are displayed in the right pane. However, after you remove the CD-ROM and insert a different CD-ROM, the right pane may still display the folders from the first CD-ROM even though the left pane correctly displays the name of the new CD-ROM.
Resolution:
Manually refresh Windows Explorer by pressing F5 or by clicking Refresh on the View menu in Windows Explorer.

Unfortunately one of the things tried was to repair XP which resulted in a partial reinstallation of XP which wiped out all previous restore points.
Microsoft support web site does not appear to have an answer to this problem or not one I can find.
The new cd does not appear in the left pane of explorer or even at the DOS prompt.

Only had this happen once with XP.

Go to start > Run > Copy and paste:

SFC /SCANNOW

Click ok have your XP CD already in the drive.
