CAT5 cabling etc

  mdshamilton 10:52 06 Mar 2006

I have a PC and router in the loft and a second PC on the ground floor - for a number of reasons I need to connect the ground floor PC to the loft router via hardwire cable. The questions I would be greatful for some advice on:

- Where should I get 30-40 metres of Cat5 cable?
- Since I need to feed the cable through some small drilled holes in walls etc, where do I get the bits and how do I re-wire an appropriate "plug-end" to one end of the cable once it is ready to be plugged into the back of the PC? (Or, where can I get some sort of wall socket to connect the cat5 cable to - and how easy is that?)

Your help is much appreciated!

Hi Mark
I would suggest you try ebay. I have checked and they have auctions for 40 meteres of cable and telephone plates that include ADSL connections. Item number: 6855443682 and Item number: 6041515309 and they will have the tools and connectors.

If you can measure it precisely and it's 30m or less buy a 30m patch cat5e cable from Amazon, cut off one of the plugs, and feed the cable through and then put another RJ45 on the end. If it's more than 30m then buy a reel of cable as 30m is the longest common ready connected cable you would get. In Amazon search type :

30m patch

and for crimp tool and connectors simply type
