The Case of the Missing Optical Drive

Acer Aspire 5536 with Windows 7 Professional
Problem One
The DVD drive sometimes appears when you click ‘computer’ in Explorer (file manager) and sometimes it doesn’t. When it does appear, right-clicking it and hitting ‘explore’ usually causes it to disappear again. In this state, pushing the button to open the dvd drive has no effect. I have uninstalled it from ‘device manager’ –and Windows never found it again –although it still makes occasional ghost appearances in Explorer!
Problem Two
Blue Screen of Death caused (according to WhoCrashed) by ATI driver ‘atikmdag.sys’ – ‘page fault in non-paged area’. Some forums link this to overheating.
Both devices have the latest drivers. Any ideas?

I would say by the sound of it, that DVD drive as a bad connection,. Some Laptops have to be taken apart to remove them but other just one screw lets them come out. Not sure about yours but worth a try removing it then reconnect it. You can most likely say that this is a Hardware Fault not Software like driver or Windows, as you have done the necessary thing to do in uninstalling from device manager
