Can't read cd's!!

  dazz10 13:35 30 Jun 2007

I have installed a new ultrabay cd drive into a thinkpad t20. I'm trying to boot from a cd to reinstall the os but it fails to realise that any cd is in the drive. When I click on the cd drive in my computer it says 'please insert disk'.
I have tried a number of cd's with no luck!

Does anybody know if there is anything I need to do to get the cd drive working or do you think it may be a faulty drive?

I have checked the BIOS and it is setup to boot from cd first!

have you double checked that the ribbon cable is connected the correct way round? coloured edge normally goes at the end nearest to the power connector. Is it set as slave or master? master has to go at the end of the ribbon cable slave to the middle position.

Thanks for the reply but it's an ultrabay drive which means it just slides into the side of the laptop.
It will only go in 1 one and doesn't allow me to change it between master and slave!

A: what os are you booting
B:if its 98 and below you need to run a boot disc
C:xp and above it should auto load if set in boot menu you just need to press any key to boot from it when asked
D:can you hear it spin up when a disc is inserted
or a power light
