Can't log onto any user in XP.

I am trying to fix a friends Dell computer which has had virus/trojan problems. His Macafee had lapsed a while ago and lots of unwanted guests moved in. We managed to get his anti-virus package updated and ran a full scan which uncovered 47 proplems that were fixed plus another 7 left over.
After first reboot after the scan we now can't logon to any of the 4 users or administrator not even in safe mode.
When attempting to logon to any user the following message is given.
Windows can't load the user's profile but has logged you on with the computers default profile.
The system has attempted to load or restore a file into the registry, but the specified file is not in a registry file format.
Any attempt to logon in any available mode just results in being dumped back to the welcome screen.
As this is a Dell machine there is no XP disk although I do have an origonal XP disk if this could help in anyway.
Any ideas while I scratch my head.

Repair XP by install over the top of existing system

1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.

2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

3. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.

To setup Windows XP now and Repair Install , press ENTER.

DO NOT choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console).

4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.

5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair.

6. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot.

Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears.

Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

Thanks for the fast reply, just checking if there are any issues if I use my XP disk and DELL didn't supply him one, will I still use his serial number if I need one.

Tried today and booted from the XP disk but got a blue screen of death before I was given any options to select.

Any ideas how to proceed now?

What error message on BSOD?
its looking like a bad hard drive.

Mabe you could attach drive to your PC and run chkdsk and virus / malware check on it.

The message mentioned it could not continue to prevent damage, info at the bottom of the screen was:-

That means that it is not caused by XP being unable to access the drive due to lack of SATA drivers.

Have you looked at the MS info from the link I posted above?
