Can't import .mpg file into Windows Movie Maker.

  wholikeswood 23:53 24 Aug 2006

Okay, hey again all, hoping you could help me with my last query.

I have converted my VOB files from my DVD-RW disc into .mpg files.

However, when I open Windows Movie Maker, it does not allow me to import them.

It says:
The [file].mpg cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again.

Is it possible to download a codec that will solve this problem? If so, where can I get it? If not, how can I get the file into Windows Movie Maker? Should I convert it to yet another type of file?

Thanks in anticipation, joe.

Okay, only 50% improvement.

It now imports the file, but I can only hear sound I cannot see the actual footage.

(I downloaded and installed the codec @ the top of the list from the link I was given - 'ffdshow')

How do I get it to import the actual visual footage too?

Okay, that 50% improvement post refers to after downloading the ffdshow codec.

I'll post up the success of downloading the K-Lite pack very soon.

Thanks for your ongoing patience with me - im sorry im such a tech noob.

Hmm. No improvement.

I installed the K-Lite pack, but still when my video file is imported into Windows Movie Maker, it only plays the sound.

What do I do?
Do I need to change an option or something?
Pls help.

PS. It is in fact importing the video clip just as an audio clip.

Just to add that I don't think that WMM will export to a VOB file once you have editted it. I am sorry but it is a useless package. I think if you want to do serious video editting you will have to use something like Studio or Ulead. David

How did you convert it from .VOB to .mpg?
