Cant boot into Windows

  [DELETED] 21:57 16 Sep 2003

Hi there anyone,

Basically i have a Packard Bell PC running Windows 98 and my kids seem to have done something to it as it won't boot into Windows and basically it gets as far as the Windows 98 screen and makes a loud beep and only shows 256 colours and goes nowhere from there.

I've tried the recovery disk that came with it but that didn't work and also tried re-installing the operating system only as i don't want to lose files that i have on pc but again that didn't work either.

Am i going to have to re-format and start afresh or is there anyone out there who can advise me what to do or how i can save my files.

Many Thanks

Can you boot into safe mode?

In case its a registry issue try:

Go to Start > Shutdown, and choose 'Restart the computer in MS-DOS'

At the blinking cursor, type the following commands successively, hitting 'enter' after EACH line:

cd windows\command
scanreg /fix

The Scanreg tool will now proceed to rebuild your registry, which can take some time.

When it finished, type exit or win, followed by hitting 'enter' to return to Windows.
Ctrl-alt-delete will work as well.
