cant access pcs

Okay. I have networked two pcs using a router with broadband access. Both running windows xp pro. I use to couldnt see each computer on the network, but i enabled some options in the network adapter which allowed me to view my own pc and the other one. So i double click on the other one and it says i cannot access it as i dont have rights. How do i access and gain the correct rights? My friend had same problem but solved it by installing SP1 on all machines. So thats what i went and did on the first machine and when it finished i couldnt access or see the machines anymore. But my other pc is still downloading sp1 so i will have to wait and see. Is this a plausible way of sorting this problem out?

By default in Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1), if you click the Sharing tab of the Properties dialog box for the folder, and then share the folder for other users to access over the network, the folder has permissions that give everyone read-only access. In versions of Windows XP that are earlier than SP1, if you share folders by using the Sharing tab of the Properties dialog box, the folder has default permissions that gives everyone full control.

NOTE: This behavior is not true for folders that you share by using the New File Share Wizard and the Net.exe command. These folders continue to have default permissions that give everyone full control.
