Cannot set an IP address on Laptop with Windows XP

I have a dell laptop that had Windows Vista before. I just installed Windows XP on the laptop. I am unable to get the TCP/IP details on laptop.

What do you mean you're "unable to get the TCP/IP details":

- Do you mean that running IPCONFIG /ALL in a Command Prompt window shows no network adapters and details?
- Are you unable to open the TCP/IP Properties sheet of an adapter in the Network Connections folder?
- Is the adapter failing to get its IP and other addresses automatically from a DHCP server, usually a router?
