Please can someone offer me some advise I can no longer access Windows 98 and receive the following error message:

While initailising devise IOS:
Error: Real mode system memory allocation failed

Can anyone give me a clue as to what I have done to cause this or how I can get around it other then to re-load the operating system?

Cheers,

If you can get to safemode run scandisk and defrag and run system file checker; RUN/ type sfc and replace any necessary files from os disc.

BTW reinstalling 98 over itself would probably fix it too (no loss of data but b/up in case).

Alternately, you could try starting in DOS and type: scanreg /restore (Don't forget the space between) this will present you with the last five dates it started successfully. Just choose one and Enter. If that doesn't work perhaps someone else will recognise what IOS is.

You could use a boot floppy to get to the command line, of course.
