Can I reduce bit rate on MP3 files?

  panhandle 16:25 25 Mar 2005

I have a portable player that plays up to 256kbps - any more distorts badly. A lot of my MP3 files are 320kbps. Naturally I can ensure future downloads are 256 max, but can I change the files I have?
And if so, is there an easy way to select all files > 256kbps and do a batch change? .........pie in the sky.

convert them back to wav files and re-encode them.

Google will give you encoding and decoding tools

Thanks Yoda Knight. It's a bit tiresome but certainly does the trick, including batch conversion once I get all the 320 bit rates into a seperate folder. Great.
