Cable modem speeds - and BT's lines

This may seem an obvious question but is 2048kb/s download speed about 2megs? I have run Dan Elwell's Broadband speed test to see what I am currently getting with NTL/Virgin cable (2048 kb/s)as I may defect to Sky who can only promise 2 megs because of 'our distance from the BT exchange'. On that point- can anything be done to improve BT's infrastructure? Anyone been there done that?

Your speed would rate as top notch on a 2MB connection.

BT has constantly been improving its infrastruture - hence ADSLMax and in time ADSL2+.

BT has been at the forefront of technological development in communications for decades - many of its ideas are in use around the world.

Video on demand, for instance. Too soon at the time for the UK to be ready for such a scheme, but taken up very successfully in the States by Time-Warner soon afterwards.
