Buying an entertainment PC for under £800

I am looking for some help choosing a media center PC which I will mainly use for the usual internet & word processing tasks but also for video editing & photography.

I have made a list from the PC World website and would be grateful for your comments on it.

HP 7640 £650 Core DUO T2050
HP 7635 £900 Core 2 Duo E6400 (bit dear)
Packard Bell 2770 £700 Core 2 Duo E6400
Phillips MT1800 £800 Core 2 Duo E6300
Phillips MT2800 £830 Core 2 Duo E6400

I like the look of the HP 7640 with a 1.60 GHz processor and compact tower with 2 GB RAM and 200 GB HD. But are there any reliability problems due to the compact size and is this processor (normally found in laptops) any good?

Many Thanks,

I forgot to mention that I will not be gameing on the PC.

Can anyone help?

Youl be fine with any of those. Compact size wont be a reliability problem, but means you wont be able to expand and may compromise speed.

Laptops are generally worse value for money, so dont go looking for them the unless you need the portability. My advise is not to spend more than 700 on a computer for your needs. The first will be fine. To compare, my computer was bought this time last year for 800 (a dell) has never let me down and performs well on games too (I know you dont need it for this but thats just a comparison).

Hope that helps

Thanks for your replies.

Any idea of the spec & price of the medion Fruitbat?

As the HP7640 processor is dual core, does that mean its speed is really 1.60 X2 GHz?

Ive also seen another Hewlett Packard, the HP7630 without monitor for £600 in Comet which sounds good.

Are there likely to be any bargains on PC's with XP now that Vista is out?
