BT broadband....convert

Hi, I was wondering if someone could possibly help with this question.

I have just taken on a new client who has 6 computers and a server. The server is really a pc running windows 2k and the clients are all 98.
I am going to upgrade all this to p4 XP machines, but they have broadband using a alcatel modem shared from the 2k server. Can I change this modem for a router and if so which one is the best and easiest to configure.
Last week I installed bt broadband for another client who ordered business 500. To my suprise, bt specified the IP addresses for 5 machines and if these were not used, the internet was not accessable for that machine. I didnt realise bt controlled access this way, I thought they simply gave an ip address for the router. This has made me wonder if a router swap for the alcatel modem will work.

Many thanks
