broadband pinging

could anyone tell me what pinging is...Have just got aol broadband and installed the free mcafee firewall

on the event lists it says that various computers are pinging mine?????????????

last time i looked it was about 2000

A Ping is like there is another computer talking to yours. You can ping your own computer or others. Go to Start/Run type in "command" then type in the window ping this will ping your own machine or ping click here you should get a response like this:

In all cases please note the space between the ping and the number.

a ping is a packet sent from one computer to another to see if it is connected to the network in this case the internet your firewall is blocking these it is doing its job

type "cmd" or "command"

in the window that pops up type

"ping w w w. google .com" (without the spaces)

hit enter
