Broad band speed - Router vs ADSL Modem

I on up to 8 Mbps

The Voyager 105 ADSL modem as supplied by the ISP regularly delvers 4.5 -5.4 Mbps-[sez the task bar icon.]

Have now replaced it with a D-Link ADSL+2 LAN.
It shows conistantly 100 Mbps.
The loading and transmitting speed is as quick as it was before -seemingly.
So what is the significance of the figure discrepancy?

The task bar icon for the router refelects the local network connection between your PC and the router, not the broadband speed between the router and the outside world.

1st two show similar results 3.5 ish for this time of not bad I guess.
