There is power to the mother board and hard drive appeasrs to be working but the system will not hold settings and defaults to bios on startup. Any suggestions? Original chip Athlon 1800. New chip Athlon 2.5 barton. What needs fixing?

Motherboard by the sound of it. What do you mean by burnt chip? If it is as you describe, chances are the motherboard went first. What was the sequence of events when you installed your new processor?

Only questions, not answers!

What burned? The new 2.5 Athlon? If so why, or did you do anything else apart from change the cpu?

OK you get referred to the BIOS. Does it look to be what you expect to see? Have you tried booting from a floppy or a CD?

All these questions may help someone else to come up with an answer for you.

you may need to clear the cmos settng so that the motherboard can revert back to your 1800 processor.

what burnt? you didn't try turning your machine on did you without a heatsink? Pentiums can deal with this, AMD's set on fire.

What motherboard do you have? Can it handle the 2500 barton?

Try loading the bios defaults and see if this changes anything.
