Bootup Failure

Is there any way of repairing the bootup sector of a hard drive please? If so, HOW?

Operating system?

Boot from XP CD to recovery consul, Using Recovery Consul
click here
click here

at the c:\windows prompt type

fixmbr press enter

type fixboot press enter

remove CD and type exit to reboot the PC

Boot from a windows ME boot disk click here

at the A:\ prompt type

fixmbr press enter

fixboot press enter

remove floppy type

press ctrl +alt+del to reboot

Thank you both for your help, especially Fruit Bat.
I've returned my friend's machine with a new drive installed. However, I've left the old drive with the boot-up problem untouched and, at the first oppoprtunity, will follow-up your suggestion, Fruit Bat.
