BOOTMGR is missing

I have a laptop hard drive which when slaved off a working PC allows me it and write to it (copy a file across and delete it) yet when I put that drive into another laptop and try to install an OS on it I get a message stating the BOOTMGR is missing. I have looked at a few forums, one which says the drive may not be bootable and another which states I need to set the intended laptop's BIOS to boot from the hard drive first which sort of defeats the object of choosing to boot from a CD first to install the OS. Any suggestions?

What OS are you using?

Is this before or after you have tried to install windows?

If after, make sure you have taken the DVD out before rebooting. if still the same ten a start up repair from the DVD usually cures the problem with the boot files on the HDD.
