Booting from CD Rom

I want to reformat the hard drive. I've backed everything up and I'm ready to start. I found some articles on this site and they say I can do it using my installation cd (I have XP Pro) I went into the BIOS and changed the 1st boot to CD Rom. Before I wipe anything off I want to make sure it all works OK but it won't boot from the CD. The CD Rom is working OK - although I have that as the secondary device, I have a CD RW as the primary. But the pc won't boot from either. I'm asked to press any key to boot from the CD but it doesn't - windows starts as normal from the hard drive. I haven't got a floppy boot disk, only the CD
