Fujitsu's problem - involving many thousands of its drives - was due to one particular faulty component manufactured by an outside supplier.

However the harm to its reputation was immense and will take years to recover.

Dust is not likely to be a problem with a hard drive as they are produced with a pure dust free air interior and completely sealed.

Dropping, banging, operating at unusual angles, magnetic fields and similar hazards are more likely to have been the cause.
