Blocking file attachments that could contain virus

I'm frequently told by symantec and others that I should configure my server to block .vbs, .bat, .exe, .pif, .scr and others but I can't get them to tell me how.
Also I believe Outlook Express is configured to block some file endings by default. How can I discover which files are being blocked? I know how to block subjects and words but if anyone can tell me how to block files using file endings I would delighted.

If you are using Outlook Express 6, then by default it blocks a wide range of attachments with the sort of suffixes that you list.

This attachment blocking can be enabled / disabled by going to Tools > Options > Security

I am not sure what sort of server software you are using, but a combination of OE6's settings and a good, updated anti-virus program is probably sufficient.

You could also use Mailwasher which allows you to monitor your e-mails before you download them. It picked up all the Sobig infected e-mails sent to me so I was able to delete them at source.
