Blank Desktop

This is a spare PC I am using. On the one I normally use I had virus warnings appearing when I last successfully booted it up. After deleting the viruses and restarting all I got was a blank desktop. I can't even get access to the start button. It also does the same thing on 'safe mode'. How can I reslove this problem?

Try booting into Safe Mode, repeatedly press F8 during the start-up, when in Safe Mode try a System Restore back to before you think you got the virus.

Sorry, just realised I missed your point about safe mode.

Press Ctrl Alt and Del, then click New Task, then open C:\WINDOWS\explorer.scf once you open it, toolbars and icons should appear ....

You could try this registry fix click here

FAO Technotiger I pressed Ctrl Alt and Del. Then i got a box with a message saying 'administrator has disabled Task Manager'.

BTW the recovery disk got me on to the C:/WINDOWS promt, but I can't seem to be able to use any of the commands. such as cd/.

Now I wonder if I typed in explorer.scf would that load up Windows Explorer?

Or you could try chub_tor's suggestion first.

Thanks for the link Technotiger. Part of the problem is that It can't get access to the start button or the 'run' box for typing in command. Would 'method 2' work though?

To try Method 1 to get the Run box hold down the Windows key and press R.

Worth a try.
