BIOS only

I recently turned on my laptop to find it goes straight to the BIOS. I noticed before hand that my laptop was getting slower so I assume it was a virus, a bad one a that.
When in the bios which comes up automatically where the toshiba home screen would usually be. It says hard disk none and optical drive none. Also in the boot menu it says something about a' new priority' and 'in first'. I cannot change anything there and the usual selection where I can choose where to boot from is gone. Also when I save and exit or try to use the default for the bios it just closes for a second then the bios comes up again!
Any help would be appreciated as I'm an IT student and rely on my laptop for studying and have exams coming up very soon!

Try renewing the CMOS battery.
The battery location is dependant on the make /model of laptop (usual place is under the memory slots)

A new battery shouldn't cost more than the price of a pint.
