bios hard drive limitations

Are the bios harddrive size limitations restricted to the onboard ide controllers? could you bypass this by disabling the onboard ide and running an upto date (promise)pci ide controller ?
would these limitations affect a bootable scsi card?

There are ways around the bios limitations as reguards size limitations , Overlay software being one of them ( available from Hard drive makers web site)and its free..the promise pci ide controller & software can also be used
