Best DVD Copy Software

I recently upgraded my regular CD-Rom to a DVD player, and my system also has a CD-RW drive.

I've been looking into DVD copying software, the applications that let you decode, compress and make backup copies of DVDs into VCD that can be burned to CD-R or CD-RW disks and played on any DVD player that supports VCD.

I actually bought one application, DVD Wizard Pro. Using it brought my entire system down and corrupted the Windows 98 operating system so badly that I had to restore a complete backup. I didn't reload the DVD Wizard Pro, and every attempt to reach their support box returned a "mailbox full" response.

Any software recommendations? I'd like to know what's works best (and easiest).

Just be prepared to allow 8 hours per DVD, oh, and it aint strictly legal.
