Beeping on startup

A friend asked me to look at his old computer today. When it is switched on there are beeps about 2 seconds long and the machine won't start, screen is blank. No amount of restarting will cure it. Would be grateful for any ideas.

Hi Goldcroft, the beeps are telling you that the BIOS has found a problem with the computer hardware. See if your friend can interpret the beeps from the information on this site click here.

Thanks. Will look at the site in detail tomorrow. Always difficult when you're four miles from the machine in question and it doesn't work!
