Backing up files to upgrade

I have a Desktop PC that runs on Windows 98..... it keeps crashing so I have decided to upgrade to XP. I obviously have loads of stuff to back up just in case but don't have a cd writer......... but I do have a laptop that has a cd writer, it also has XP too. Could I connect the two up and download the files to back up from the Desktop PC to the Laptop?? If so what would I need cable wise?

A crossover Ethernet cable. See click here

(I assume you have a network card in each PC).

It can also be done (much more slowly) with a parallel or serial cable - see click here

Newish computer and laptop so would presume they have a network card......cheers jazzypop will look at it in detail tomorrow!
