background tasks on XP

Using ctr+alt+del to stop any programs you don't need in the background is a useful tool. However,in XP I cannot decipher what all these programs are as the short description code could mean anything. I can have anything up to 28 tasks running in the background even though I keep my p.c in good order. Besides, on a number of occasions I have had to restart because of closing an essential task. Does anyone know how to decide the essential from non-essential tasks. Incidentally, I have run 'msconfig' and configured my 'Start-up'

click here for brief descriptions of the actual .exe files. Some of these exe files are started as services. Some are not.

If you run XP, has an internet connection, a printer, runs AV and a firewall, a special mouse or keyboard, 28 processes are not really that many.
