avi, mpeg1, mpeg2, mpeg3, and mpeg4

I am trying to convert an AVI file so that it will fit onto a dvd (4.7gig) I am told that if i convert to an mpeg file it will shrink it sufficiently to fit. I need to shrink by about .5 gig. Can anyone advise which would be the best format to shrink down too.
Many thanks

Probably MPEG 4.

MPEG 1 is good for films.

MPEG 2 is good for TV (it reverts to something similar to MPEG 1 for films).

MPEG 3 - is there one? - I'm not aware of it.

MPEG 4 is good for high compression applications such as sending things down the internet and tends to give better picture quality for high compression (ie low bit rate).

mpeg3 is mp3 for audio
