AVG reporting MBR virus

  Newuser49 12:35 08 Dec 2006

Setting up computer which has not been used for a few months. HP Compaq, Pent 4, 2.8Gh, XP Pro SP2.

Loaded new AVG anti-virus which reports -

Partition table (MBR) - Virus found Are Three
Number of threats 1
Looked at AVG website but could not find any reference.

Clamwin, Trend Housecall, and Mcafee online scanner do not find any problems.

Can anyone advise?

Took me a while to read all that!

I was hoping that someone would tell me that the AVG report was a false positive since none of the other antivirus progs showed up anything. However, I dont know if these included the MBR in their tests.

Also AVG has now stopped reporting this virus but I suspect that it is now for some reason skipping the MBR check.

Anyway, I'm a coward. I think I'll just reformat and re-install.

Many thanks for your help

I'm not sure a format rebuilds the boot sector (to wipe out the nasty), so you may have to do that too.

Thanks for that
If I read the tech notes right a virus in the MBR in XP will be contained unless an older operating system is added. However, I just dont like the idea of something lurking there.
How do I delete the MBR and will that cause problems when restoring XP?
(I have the drive backed up to another drive with Acronis in case of disaster)
